African Horse Sickness

 300 horses in Thailand died in 3 weeks (approximately 100 horses/week).

We have to work together to stop African Horse Sickness outbreak that is a serious epidemic now.

The African Horse Sickness (AHS) is caused by a virus from wild animal in Africa. Midges have been found to be carriers of this sickness.

95% of infected horse can’t be cured and eventually die.

It affects villagers who raise horses for work and livelihood.

If it widely spreads, Thai native horses which are an ancient breed in the same group as Mongolian Horses will be extinct.

 Cheap blue mosquito net which is used in horse farm can’t protect horses from midges. 1 Horse in this net died and 2 horses are infected. They will die in 1-3 days.

How to protect your horses :

1. Do not move your horses, mules, donkeys and zebras following the Department of Livestock Development announcement to reduce the spread of the disease
2. Put up proper nets and then spray chemical solution to kill midges on the net
3. Vaccinate horses to build immunity

However, horses need time to build immunity. To stop the infection spreading, using  32 eye MESH mosquito net ( 1,500 THB ) per horse will get the best result.

Today, many sectors have to work against the time so we would like to invite everyone to donate money to buy proper nets for Thai ponies

The midges can’t pass through the net (32 MESH). Chemicals on the net will kill the ones attempting to get through.

Process :

• We work with the Department of Livestock Development and private veterinarians to donate nets to needy people.
• If the donation is left, we will buy pest control chemicals to treat the nets and on the horses

• We can stop African Horse Sickness outbreak in horses
• We can maintain amount of Thai native horses
